What Motor Power Is Needed for Grinding Sulfur to 200 Mesh

200 mesh sulfur powder corresponds to approximately D97 ~75 μm. The standard equipment for continuous commercial production is a nitrogen-protected air classifier mill (ACM). When sizing power, you must separate the main grinding motor, classifier motor, fan and auxiliary drives, plus account for sulfur’s heat and safety constraints. The power rating is directly tied to target hourly throughput.

Typical ACM Power Breakdown for 200 Mesh Sulfur

200 mesh is coarser than 325 mesh, so the specific energy consumption is lower, roughly 20–30 kWh per ton of finished sulfur powder. However, sulfur must run under closed-loop nitrogen, so you cannot directly use power data from mineral grinding in open air.

Small pilot line (100–200 kg/h output)

  • Grinding main motor: 11 kW
  • Classifier motor: 2.2 kW
  • Circulation fan: 15 kW
  • Feed & auxiliary motors: ~1.5 kW
  • Total installed power: ~29.7 kW

Medium production line (300–500 kg/h output)

  • Grinding main motor: 22 kW
  • Classifier motor: 3–5.5 kW
  • Circulation fan: 22–30 kW
  • Feed & auxiliary motors: ~2.2 kW
  • Total installed power: ~50–60 kW

Large industrial line (800–1200 kg/h output)

  • Grinding main motor: 45–55 kW
  • Classifier motor: 7.5–15 kW
  • Circulation fan: 37–45 kW
  • Feed & auxiliary motors: ~3 kW
  • Total installed power: ~90–118 kW

Key Factors That Change Required Motor Power

  1. Heat-limited feed rate (sulfur-specific constraint)
Even if the motor has enough power to grind more material, heat buildup limits throughput. For sulfur, operators often run at 70–85% of the mill’s nominal mineral capacity to keep chamber temperature safely below sulfur’s melting point (~115°C). This means you may need to select a slightly larger motor than theoretical mineral-based calculation.
  2. Feed particle size
Larger incoming sulfur lumps demand more grinding power. Proper pre-crushing reduces load on the ACM main motor. Metal removal before feeding also protects rotor and liners and avoids power spikes.
  3. Nitrogen circulation system power is non-negotiable
The fan/blower for closed nitrogen circulation consumes a large share of total power. Many buyers only look at the grinding rotor motor and underestimate full-line power demand.
  4. Safety derating
All motors must be explosion-proof dust-rated for sulfur dust atmosphere. You cannot use standard general-purpose motors.

Other Mill Types for 200 Mesh Sulfur (Power Reference)

  • Turbo mill: Similar power profile to ACM for same throughput, slightly simpler classifier power.
  • Roller mill: Lower specific power (~18–25 kWh/t), but risk of sulfur compaction.
  • Fluidized bed jet mill: Not economical for 200 mesh. Compressor power is far higher, reserved for submicron grades.

Practical Sizing Recommendation

Start with your target hourly tonnage. For 200 mesh sulfur on nitrogen-protected ACM:

  • <200 kg/h → main motor 11 kW
  • 300–500 kg/h → main motor 22 kW
  • 800–1200 kg/h → main motor 45–55 kW

Always include fan, classifier, feeding and nitrogen system power for total site power planning. Leave a 15–20% power safety margin to handle transient loads and thermal restrictions.

For producing 200 mesh sulfur powder with a nitrogen inerted air classifier mill, the main grinding motor ranges from 11 kW for small pilot capacity up to 55 kW for large continuous lines. The total installed line power includes classifier, circulation fan and auxiliaries and is substantially higher than just the grinding motor rating. Sulfur’s thermal limits require derating operating throughput, so the motor selection should include a safety margin.
