A desulfurization mill and a standard sulfur grinder serve completely opposite purposes and process entirely different raw materials. The desulfurization mill grinds alkaline sorbents (mostly limestone) for flue gas desulfurization (FGD), to capture SO₂ from power plant exhaust. A standard sulfur grinder (sulfur mill) grinds elemental sulfur lumps into fine sulfur powder for rubber, agrochemical, chemical or lithium‑sulfur battery raw materials. Their core differences lie in feed material, design priorities, safety systems, operating atmosphere and product targets.
1. Feed Material & End Purpose
Desulfurization mill
- Feed: Limestone, quicklime or hydrated lime. These alkaline minerals act as desulfurization sorbents to neutralize sulfur dioxide in flue gas.
- Purpose: Make reactive sorbent powder, typically 250–325 mesh, to maximize surface area for gas‑solid reaction with SO₂. It removes sulfur from exhaust gas, it does not grind elemental sulfur.
- Common mill type: Vertical roller mill (VRM), Raymond mill, trapezium roller mill, operated under normal ambient air.
Standard sulfur grinder (sulfur mill)
- Feed: Solid elemental sulfur lumps / sulfur prills.
- Purpose: Produce fine or ultra-fine sulfur powder as a finished product for downstream manufacturing.
- Common mill type: Nitrogen-protected ACM classifier mill, turbo mill, pin mill, fluidized bed jet mill.
2. Core Design & Grinding Mechanism
Desulfurization mill
Desulfurization mills use compression bed grinding (vertical roller mill) or low-speed roller crushing. They are designed for high throughput, low energy cost and built-in drying. Hot flue gas or hot air is often introduced into the grinding chamber to dry moist limestone feed. The classifier controls PSD to guarantee high reactivity for FGD absorption towers. No special anti-explosion design for sulfur dust is required.
Standard sulfur grinder
Sulfur grinders rely on high-speed impact or supersonic particle collision. The key design priority is controlling heat, static electricity and explosion hazards. Sulfur melts at ~115°C and its fine dust is highly explosive. The machine body, pipelines and filter housing must be fully conductive and grounded. Hot air drying is forbidden, because elevated temperature increases melting and ignition risk.
3. Atmosphere & Safety Package (The Biggest Difference)
Desulfurization mill
Operates with normal ambient air. Limestone dust is non-flammable and non-explosive. Safety requirements focus only on dust containment, noise and mechanical protection. No nitrogen inerting, oxygen monitoring or explosion venting panels are mandatory.
Standard sulfur grinder
Must run in a closed-loop nitrogen inert atmosphere. The whole system purges air before startup and maintains low oxygen levels. Online oxygen sensors, temperature interlocks, static dissipation, metal detection and explosion relief panels are all mandatory safety components. Even small metal sparks or static discharge can trigger sulfur dust deflagration in air.
4. Particle Size Target & PSD Requirements
Desulfurization mill: Target fineness normally D90 ~45 μm (325 mesh). The priority is high specific surface area for chemical reaction; PSD tolerance is relatively loose. Oversize particles reduce desulfurization efficiency. Submicron production is not required.
Standard sulfur grinder: Fineness range is wide, from 325 mesh medium-fine powder down to submicron battery-grade sulfur. PSD must be tightly controlled. Too many ultra-fine fines raise explosion risk, while oversized particles hurt vulcanization or battery cathode performance.
5. Operating Parameters & Cost Profile
Desulfurization mill: Very large continuous throughput, low power consumption per ton. Uses waste heat from power plants for drying. Low maintenance cost, designed for 24/7 long-cycle operation.
Standard sulfur grinder: Lower throughput for the same equipment size. Nitrogen compression and recycling increase running cost. Wear parts and safety auxiliary systems push up capital investment. Temperature must stay below sulfur melting point at all times.

| Grinding principle | Roller compression / bed grinding | High-speed impact or jet collision |
| Process gas | Hot ambient air for drying | Closed recycled nitrogen |
| Explosion risk | None (limestone dust) | High (sulfur dust) |
| Key safety | Dust containment | Nitrogen inerting, static grounding, explosion protection |
| Typical fineness | 250–325 mesh | 325 mesh down to submicron |
A desulfurization mill grinds limestone powder to scrub sulfur dioxide from flue gas and runs safely in open air. A standard sulfur grinder mills elemental sulfur into fine powder, requiring full nitrogen inerting and anti-static, explosion-proof construction. They are not interchangeable. Using a desulfurization roller mill to grind raw sulfur would create severe risks of sulfur melting, static buildup and dust explosion.
