Sub-micron sulfur powder (typically D97 <1 μm, mainly for lithium-sulfur battery cathode raw materials) cannot be produced by ordinary mechanical impact mills. The core grinding unit is a closed-loop nitrogen-protected fluidized bed opposed jet mill, paired with a full set of pre-treatment, gas supply, powder collection, safety monitoring and automatic packaging equipment. The whole line must eliminate oxygen ingress, control static discharge and avoid thermal hotspots.
1. Pre-Treatment Equipment (Front-End)
- Pre-crusher: Reduces bulk sulfur lumps into small uniform feed particles suitable for jet mill feeding. A modified hammer pre-crusher with static grounding is commonly used.
- Magnetic separator + metal detector: Critical for removing ferrous and metallic impurities. Metal fragments will abrade jet nozzles and create spark hazards inside the grinding chamber.
- Vibratory screener: Screens out oversized agglomerates to guarantee consistent feed size, stabilizing fluidization inside the jet mill.
- Quantitative screw feeder (nitrogen-sealed rotary valve): Feeds sulfur steadily without air leakage. Nitrogen blanketing at the feed inlet stops oxygen entering the closed circuit.
2. Core Grinding Unit: Fluidized Bed Opposed Jet Mill
This is the heart of the line. High-pressure nitrogen nozzles accelerate sulfur particles for particle-on-particle collision, with no high-speed metal rotors to generate friction heat. An integrated high-precision dynamic classifier wheel cuts the top particle size, sending coarse particles back into the fluidized bed for regrinding to achieve sub-micron fineness. All wetted parts are conductive and fully grounded for static dissipation.
3. Nitrogen Closed-Loop Gas Supply & Circulation System
- Nitrogen generator or liquid nitrogen storage tank: Supplies dry, clean nitrogen for system purging and jet nozzle drive gas.
- High-pressure nitrogen compressor & gas dryer: Delivers dry high-pressure nitrogen to the mill nozzles; moisture must be removed to prevent sulfur agglomeration.
- Gas chiller / heat exchanger: Cools recycled nitrogen after powder collection to keep the entire loop temperature stable and avoid sulfur softening.
- Circulation fan: Moves nitrogen through the full closed circuit, minimizing nitrogen consumption by recycling most process gas.
4. Powder Collection System
- Anti-static pulse dust collector: Uses conductive, anti-static filter bags to capture sub-micron sulfur powder. Full grounding prevents static charge accumulation on ultra-fine sulfur dust.
- Cyclone pre-collector (optional): Separates most finished powder before the filter to reduce filter load and extend bag service life.
- Nitrogen-sealed rotary discharge valve: Discharges collected sub-micron sulfur powder while preventing air backflow into the inert loop.
5. Safety Monitoring & Explosion Protection Package (Mandatory)
- Online oxygen analyzers: Installed at multiple points across the loop. PLC automatically adds makeup nitrogen and triggers interlock shutdown if oxygen exceeds the preset safe threshold.
- Temperature & pressure transmitters: Continuously monitor chamber temperature and system pressure.
- Explosion venting panels / explosion suppression: Designed for deflagration relief. Even under nitrogen inerting, this passive protection remains required for risk mitigation.
- Full static grounding & conductive linings: All pipes, mill body, collector and valves are bonded and grounded to eliminate static discharge risks.
- Explosion-proof electrical components: All motors, sensors and control hardware meet dust-explosion protection standards.
6. Automatic Packaging & Auxiliary Equipment
- Nitrogen blanketing packaging machine: Fills sub-micron sulfur into sealed drums or bags under inert atmosphere, preventing re-oxidation and moisture absorption during packaging.
- PLC/DCS control cabinet: Centralizes parameter control, alarm management and safety interlock logic. It manages nitrogen purging sequence, feed rate, classifier speed, oxygen and temperature interlocks.
Process Workflow Overview
Bulk sulfur → Pre-crushing → Metal removal & screening → Nitrogen-sealed feeding → Fluidized bed jet milling + dynamic classification → Powder collection → Nitrogen gas cooling & recycling → Inert packaging → Continuous safety monitoring.
Important Notes
- Mechanical mills (ACM, pin mill, turbo mill) cannot reliably produce consistent sub-micron sulfur powder.
- The nitrogen inert system is not optional. Sub-micron sulfur dust has very high explosion sensitivity; production under ambient air is strictly prohibited.
- This line has high capital and operating cost, reserved for high-value battery-grade sulfur materials. For medium-fine grades such as 325 mesh sulfur, nitrogen-protected classifier mills are more economical.
To produce sub-micron sulfur powder, the core equipment is a nitrogen closed-loop fluidized bed opposed jet mill. It requires matched pre-crushing and metal removal units, high-pressure nitrogen supply system, anti-static powder collection, real-time oxygen monitoring, explosion protection and inert packaging. The whole system is designed for near-zero frictional heat and low ignition risk for ultra-fine sulfur.
