1. Minimum Autoignition Temperature of Sulfur Dust Layers (MAIT – Most Relevant for Mills)
This is the temperature of a hot surface that will ignite a settled layer of sulfur powder on liners, rotors, ducts, or cyclone walls.
- Ultra-fine milled sulfur (1–10 μm, finished product): 220 ~ 248 °C
- Medium sulfur (30–75 μm rubber grade): 250 ~ 270 °C
- Coarse granular sulfur (>100 μm raw feed): 280 ~ 310 °C
Critical Milling Risk Note
Fine sulfur drastically lowers self-ignition temperature. Even localized hot spots above 220°C inside the grinding chamber can slowly heat trapped caked sulfur deposits and trigger spontaneous combustion over time.
2. Autoignition Temperature of Suspended Sulfur Dust Clouds
When fine sulfur floats as an airborne explosive mixture:
- Cloud autoignition temperature: 330–360 °C
Higher than layer ignition temperature; hot surfaces are a far bigger threat than hot gas clouds in normal milling.
3. Sulfur Melting Point (Precursor to Self-Ignition)
Elemental sulfur melts at 112–119°C. While melting alone does not cause ignition, it creates severe safety risks that lead to self-heating and autoignition:
- Molten sulfur sticks tightly to hot metal liners, forming thick insulated sulfur layers that trap frictional heat; heat cannot dissipate, temperature continuously rises toward 220°C ignition point.
- Melted sulfur binds hard tramp impurities (sand, metal scraps), creating high-friction hot spots that accelerate temperature buildup.
- Long-term baked molten sulfur deposits will slowly self-heat and smolder even after the mill shuts down.
4. Smoldering Risk (Hidden Delayed Ignition Hazard)
Caked sulfur layers above 180°C enter slow smoldering before full self-ignition:
- Smoldering sulfur releases sulfur dioxide gas; local hot spots can flare into explosion when airflow disturbs the smoldering layer and creates suspended dust clouds.
- Smoldering may persist for hours after mill shutdown, posing overnight fire/explosion risks.
5. Practical Safety Temperature Limits for Sulfur Grinding Mills
To avoid approaching self-ignition conditions, standard operational limits:
- Normal continuous running temperature: ≤90°C (water jacket / cold nitrogen cooling required)
- High-temperature alarm interlock threshold: 95°C (auto-reduce feed rate)
- Emergency mill trip temperature: 100°C (stop feeding immediately to prevent sulfur melting)
- Any equipment surface temperature exceeding 180°C requires immediate shutdown for inspection, as smoldering risk begins.
