For nitrogen-inerted air classifier mill (ACM) sulfur fine grinding, pre-crushing reduces bulk sulfur blocks down to the controlled feed size of ≤10 mm (ideal 3–5 mm) before entering the ACM. Sulfur is brittle, low melting, and has dust explosion risks, so the pre-crushing train cannot use standard mineral crushing equipment; all units must be static-ground, explosion-protected, and avoid excessive heat generation.
Complete pre-treatment sequence
Raw sulfur blocks → Primary crushing → Screening → Magnetic separation → Surge hopper → Feeder → ACM
1. Primary pre-crusher: Toothed roll crusher (the preferred option for sulfur)
Recommended machine: Static conductive toothed double roll crusher
- Working principle: Low-speed compression and tearing, minimal impact energy. Generates far less frictional heat compared with hammer crushers.
- Advantages for sulfur:
- Low rotor speed → low heat generation, avoids localized hotspots that melt sulfur.
- Produces fewer ultra-fine dusts at the crushing stage, reducing static and explosion hazards.
- Adjustable roll gap to control output particle size (set gap for 3–10 mm).
- Conductive rolls and full grounding to dissipate static charge.
- Limitation: Not suitable for very large solid blocks (>200 mm). For big ingots, add a simple block breaker first.
Alternatives & equipment to avoid
✅ Hammer mill (small low-speed grounded hammer crusher): Used only for small-scale pilot lines. Higher impact creates more fines and heat; must run at reduced speed. Not recommended for continuous large production.
❌ Jaw crusher: Not ideal. High compression force may squeeze and smear soft sulfur, causing caking. Also produces more dust.
❌ High-speed impact crusher: Strong impact generates excessive heat and large amounts of fine sulfur dust, high static risk. Strictly avoided for sulfur.
2. Vibratory screen (vibrating sieve)
Install immediately after the roll crusher.
- Purpose: Separate oversize chunks >10 mm, return oversize back to the pre-crusher for re-crushing.
- Features required: Conductive screen deck, static grounding, nitrogen blanketing on the screen housing to limit oxygen ingress.
- Critical: Maintains narrow feed size band into the ACM, preventing heat spikes and PSD instability in downstream fine grinding.
3. Magnetic separator (permanent magnetic drum / magnetic pulley)
Install after screening, before the surge hopper/feeder.
- Function: Remove ferrous metal fragments (iron nails, steel scraps, metal wear debris). Metal hitting the ACM rotor can generate sparks inside the nitrogen loop, which is a major deflagration hazard.
- Recommendation: Use a conductive magnetic pulley mounted at the discharge conveyor of the pre-crushing circuit. Add a metal detector as secondary protection for high-capacity lines.
4. Surge hopper + anti-bridging accessories
Ground hopper with vibration pads or fluidization (low-pressure nitrogen purge). Sulfur granules easily arch/bridge, leading to surging feed into the ACM.
- Hopper interior with smooth conductive lining.
- Small nitrogen blanketing to prevent air entry and moisture absorption.
5. Conveying equipment between units
Use grounded conductive belt conveyor or screw conveyor. Avoid plastic non-conductive belts, which accumulate static electricity.
Safety requirements for the whole pre-crushing section
- All wetted components must be conductive and fully bonded/grounded to dissipate static charge.
- Low operating speed to limit temperature rise; monitor surface temperature, keep well below 115°C.
- Housing is gas-tight with nitrogen blanketing, oxygen monitoring, explosion venting.
- Dust containment: Fully enclosed system to prevent sulfur dust leakage.
Selection guide by production scale
- Pilot line (100–200 kg/h ACM output)
Small grounded toothed roll crusher + small vibratory sieve + magnetic separator. - Medium production (300–600 kg/h ACM output)
Standard double toothed roll crusher + circular vibratory screen + magnetic pulley + metal detector. - Large industrial line (800–1200 kg/h ACM output)
Heavy-duty low-speed toothed roll crusher + linear vibrating screen + magnetic separator + metal detector, closed nitrogen atmosphere.
Common mistakes in pre-crushing setup
- Skipping screening: Oversized lumps enter ACM, creating heat spikes and caking.
- Using high-speed hammer crushers for large production: excess fines, static hazard and heat buildup.
- No metal removal: tramp metal sparks become a critical safety risk inside the inert ACM loop.
- Non-conductive liners and poor grounding: static accumulation on sulfur dust.
The primary pre-crushing equipment for sulfur fine grinding before ACM is a low-speed static-grounded toothed double roll crusher, paired with a vibratory screen for oversize removal, magnetic separator + metal detector for tramp metal protection, and grounded enclosed conveying/hopper systems. High-speed impact crushers are not suitable for sulfur due to heat and dust explosion risks. This pre-treatment train delivers consistent 3–10 mm feed to the classifier mill, stabilizing throughput, PSD and operational safety.
