What is the chemical formula of sulfur powder?

The chemical composition of sulfur powder is elemental sulfur, and its chemical formula is expressed in two common forms depending on the level of precision:

1. Simplest / Empirical Formula: S

This is the most widely used notation in general chemistry, industrial production and daily technical documents. Since sulfur has multiple allotropes and all are elemental sulfur, it is conventionally abbreviated as S for macroscopic descriptions of sulfur powder, sulfur blocks and other sulfur products.

2. Molecular Formula (most stable form at room temperature): S₈

Under normal temperature and pressure, industrial sulfur powder is mainly composed of orthorhombic sulfur (α-sulfur), the most thermodynamically stable allotrope. Its molecule consists of 8 sulfur atoms connected in a crown-shaped ring structure, so the accurate molecular formula is S₈.

Additional notes

  • Sulfur has other allotropes such as S₂, S₄ and S₆, but these are only stable at high temperature or special conditions. The sulfur powder produced by grinding at room temperature is almost entirely S₈ ring molecules.
  • The grinding process only changes the physical particle size of sulfur, and does not change its molecular structure; the chemical composition remains elemental sulfur.
