What Blower Capacity Is Required for a Sulfur Powder Production Line

For nitrogen inerted ACM sulfur grinding lines, the blower (circulation fan) handles closed-loop nitrogen flow, which defines the gas volume for particle conveyance, classification and heat removal. Blower capacity is specified by volumetric flow (Nm³/h or m³/h at operating conditions) and total pressure rise (Pa). It is sized based on the target nitrogen-to-material mass ratio, product fineness, mill size, and total system pressure drop across the entire loop (mill, classifier, pipeline, heat exchanger, baghouse, elbows and orifices).

1. Core sizing principle

Use the optimized nitrogen-to-material mass ratio (1.2–2.0 kg N₂ / kg sulfur feed):

  • Coarser grades (150 mesh): 1.2 ~1.5 kg N₂/kg sulfur
  • Medium-fine (200 / 325 mesh): 1.5 ~1.8 kg N₂/kg sulfur
  • Fine grades (500 mesh): 1.8 ~2.0 kg N₂/kg sulfur

Nitrogen density at typical loop conditions (~80°C, slight positive gauge pressure ≈1.05 bar) ≈1.04 kg/Nm³.

Formula:
Nitrogen mass flow = feed rate × nitrogen-to-material ratio
Blower volumetric flow (Nm³/h) = nitrogen mass flow ÷ nitrogen density

Example calculations

  1. Small pilot line, feed rate 200 kg/h, 325 mesh, ratio 1.8
    Mass N₂ = 200 ×1.8 = 360 kg/h
    Volumetric flow = 360 ÷1.04 ≈ 346 Nm³/h

  2. Medium production line, feed rate 500 kg/h, 325 mesh, ratio 1.7
    Mass N₂ =500 ×1.7=850 kg/h
    Volumetric flow =850 ÷1.04 ≈ 817 Nm³/h

  3. Large line, feed rate 1000 kg/h, 200 mesh, ratio1.4
    Mass N₂ =1000 ×1.4=1400 kg/h
    Volumetric flow =1400 ÷1.04 ≈ 1346 Nm³/h

2. Pressure rise requirement (critical for closed nitrogen loop)

Sulfur closed-loop systems have high total resistance. The blower must overcome pressure loss from:
ACM grinding chamber + classifier + pipeline bends + heat exchanger + anti-static baghouse filter + expansion joints.

  • Small ACM line: 2200–3000 Pa total pressure rise
  • Medium ACM line: 3000–4000 Pa total pressure rise
  • Large ACM line: 4000–5000 Pa total pressure rise

Important: Baghouse pressure drop increases as filter bags cake; add a 20% pressure safety margin for filter loading over service cycles.

3. Blower type selection for sulfur nitrogen loop

  • Centrifugal fan (backward curved impeller): Standard choice for closed nitrogen circulation. Must be fully conductive, static grounded, explosion-proof dust rated.
  • Roots blowers are rarely used here; they produce too high pressure and heat for ACM closed gas circulation.

4. Key factors that increase required blower capacity

  1. Finer product: Higher nitrogen-to-material ratio needed for heat removal, larger gas flow.
  2. Higher feed throughput: Directly increases nitrogen mass demand.
  3. Longer piping / more elbows: Higher pressure drop, requires blower with higher pressure head (not just higher volume).
  4. Higher operating temperature: Nitrogen expands; actual operating volumetric flow increases.
  5. Filter aging: Clogged bags add resistance over time.

5. Common sizing mistakes

  1. Select blower only by mill nameplate air rating for mineral air milling, without recalculating for nitrogen gas density and closed-loop pressure loss. Air and nitrogen have different density, cannot directly swap.
  2. Ignore 20% safety margin: When bags foul, the fan flow drops and mill becomes starved of gas, causing heat spikes and sulfur caking.
  3. Under-spec static conductive construction: standard carbon steel fans can create static charge accumulation, safety hazard for sulfur dust.

6. Blower motor power reference

  • ~350 Nm³/h: 11–15 kW
  • ~800 Nm³/h: 22–30 kW
  • ~1350 Nm³/h: 37–45 kW

Blower capacity for sulfur ACM nitrogen loop is calculated from target feed rate and optimized nitrogen-to-material ratio. Typical volumetric blower demand ranges from ~350 Nm³/h for small pilot lines up to ~1350 Nm³/h and above for large production lines. The blower must deliver sufficient volumetric nitrogen flow plus enough pressure head to overcome total system resistance, with 20% safety margin for filter fouling. All wetted fan components must be static conductive and explosion-proof for sulfur dust service.
