What Is the Typical Specific Energy Consumption for Sulfur Grinding to 150 Mesh

150 mesh sulfur powder corresponds to D97 ≈104 μm, produced on a nitrogen closed-loop air classifier mill (ACM). Specific energy consumption is expressed as kWh per ton of finished sulfur powder. There are two ways to quote power: mill main grinding motor only, and full line total power (grinding motor + classifier + nitrogen circulation fan + feed & auxiliary drives), which is the number used for real project utility budgeting.

Typical range

  • Main grinding motor only: 12–18 kWh/ton
  • Full system total specific energy (recommended for engineering estimates): 22–28 kWh/ton

This is lower than 200 mesh and much lower than 325 mesh sulfur, because 150 mesh is coarser and requires less particle breakage and recirculation.

Key variables that shift energy consumption

  1. Feed size
If incoming sulfur lumps are oversized (>10 mm), extra impact energy is required, pushing specific energy up toward the high end (26–28 kWh/t). With well pre-crushed feed (3–5 mm uniform granules), the system runs near the lower end (22–24 kWh/t).

  2. Thermal derating (sulfur unique constraint)
Sulfur’s low melting point forces operators to avoid overloading the mill. Even though the mill could run higher throughput at higher loading, temperature limits reduce operating feed rate, which raises the kWh/ton slightly compared with inert mineral milling in open air.

  3. Nitrogen circulation efficiency
Well-designed heat exchangers and optimized fan geometry reduce gas loop power consumption. Older or oversized nitrogen circuits increase total system energy consumption.

  4. Target PSD strictness
If the specification requires a tight PSD span and minimal fine tail, classifier speed will be slightly higher, increasing internal recirculation and energy use. For general rubber-grade 150 mesh with looser PSD tolerance, energy sits near the bottom of the range.

Comparison reference

  • 150 mesh sulfur: 22–28 kWh/t total system
  • 200 mesh sulfur: 20–30 kWh/t total system
  • 325 mesh sulfur: 30–45 kWh/t total system

Note: Roller mills can also make 150 mesh sulfur with lower specific energy (~18–22 kWh/t), but compression grinding carries higher risk of sulfur compaction and caking, so ACM remains preferred for most continuous sulfur production lines. Jet mills are not economical for 150 mesh grades due to very high compressor power.

Practical operating guidance

The optimal operating point is at the highest stable feed rate that keeps chamber temperature <90°C, maintains D97 ≤104 μm, and avoids caking. Running at too low feed rate reduces throughput and increases kWh/ton significantly.

For nitrogen inerted ACM producing 150 mesh sulfur powder, the full-line specific energy consumption typically runs from 22 to 28 kWh per ton of finished product. The grinding rotor alone consumes 12–18 kWh/t. Actual site energy will vary based on feed pre-treatment, nitrogen circuit design, PSD specification and thermal operating limits.
