Yes, fine sulfur powder can trigger dust‑cloud explosions at normal room temperature, without external heating. Room‑temperature conditions do not prevent sulfur dust explosions.

Sulfur dust explosion is a dust‑cloud deflagration driven by ignition sources, not self‑ignition caused by high ambient temperature.

  • Room temperature (20‑25 °C) is far below sulfur’s auto‑ignition temperature (AIT ≈ 232 °C for sulfur dust). Under static room‑temperature storage, loose piled sulfur powder will not spontaneously catch fire by itself.
  • However, if fine sulfur particles become suspended in air to form an explosive dust cloud at room temperature, an external ignition source can ignite the mixture instantly. The ignition source supplies the required activation energy, rather than high surrounding temperature.

Key risk parameters at room‑temperature environment

  1. Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE): ~0.14 mJ
    At room temperature, airborne fine sulfur dust only needs an extremely tiny spark. Static discharge from friction, a small mechanical impact spark is enough for ignition. No high‑temperature environment is required.
  2. Minimum Explosive Concentration (MEC): ~17.5 g/m³
    Once room‑temperature air inside the mill, pipeline or dust collector reaches this dust concentration range, explosion preconditions are satisfied.
  3. Coarse sulfur powder / lump sulfur
    At room temperature, coarse sulfur hardly forms explosive dust clouds, so explosion risk is very low. Hazard rises sharply after ultra‑fine grinding.

  1. Room temperature + fine suspended sulfur dust cloud + ignition source → Explosion may occur
    This is the main hazard inside sulfur mills. All milling, classification, conveying and bag‑housing processes run at near‑ambient temperature, yet flash‑explosion accidents still take place.
  2. Room temperature + static piled sulfur powder (no suspension, no ignition source) → Will not explode spontaneously
    Stationary deposited sulfur dust at room temperature cannot explode on its own. Danger arises only when it is stirred up into airborne dust clouds and meets an ignition trigger.

Practical safety implication for sulfur milling

Even if equipment runs without heating and maintains normal room temperature, operators cannot ignore explosion‑proof measures. Static elimination, nitrogen inerting, tramp‑metal removal and dust‑deposit cleaning remain mandatory. Room‑temperature operation does not equal safe operation.
