What is the lower explosive limit of sulfur dust in air

For combustible dusts, the term Minimum Explosible Concentration (MEC) is the official equivalent of LEL for dust-air suspensions, which is the minimum mass of dust per unit air volume required to support flame propagation.

  2. OSHA / NFPA 654 rule of thumb: Maintain airborne dust concentration permanently below 10 g/m³ (50% of MEC) as a safe operating margin to avoid crossing LEL.
  3. Residual dust layers thicker than 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) on equipment surfaces pose a secondary explosion hazard: any shock, vibration or airflow surge re-suspends settled dust and instantly creates LEL-compliant explosive clouds.
