Can an air classifier mill be used for other types of materials besides sulfur?

The air classifier mill (ACM) is a highly versatile dry grinding and classification unit, not limited to sulfur processing. It is a mainstream fine/ultra-fine powder processing equipment widely applied across dozens of industries. By adjusting internal components, operating parameters, material contact parts, ventilation systems and safety configurations, it can process a huge variety of solid materials. Only materials with extreme physical properties are not suitable for standard ACM models.

1. Main Categories of Processable Materials

Below are the most common materials processed by air classifier mills, grouped by industry:

1.1 Non-metallic minerals & industrial fillers

This is the largest application field for ACMs. These materials require precise particle size distribution and low impurity content:

  • Calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin, bentonite, wollastonite, mica
  • Quartz powder, feldspar, barite, gypsum, limestone
  • Alumina, silica powder, silicon carbide (hard abrasive minerals)

1.2 Chemical raw materials & additives

Including both general chemicals and combustible chemical powders (with upgraded safety designs):

  • Carbon black, graphite, carbon powder, pigment powder, dyestuff
  • Resin powder, rubber compounding agents, chemical catalysts
  • Fertilizer raw materials, pesticide powder, chemical intermediates

1.3 Food, agriculture & feed materials

Strict hygiene requirements apply; units use food-grade stainless steel and non-toxic coatings:

  • Grain flour, corn starch, potato starch, bean protein powder
  • Spices, herbal powder, dried fruit powder, feed additives
  • Plant fiber powder, agricultural waste powder

1.4 Pharmaceutical & cosmetic raw materials

High purity, low cross-contamination and low heat generation are core requirements:

  • Herbal medicine powder, medicinal excipients
  • Talc powder for cosmetics, pearl powder, plant extract powder

1.5 Plastic, rubber & new energy materials

Focus on narrow particle size distribution and anti-agglomeration:

  • Plastic powder, EVA powder, PVC powder
  • Lithium battery raw materials, electrode materials, ceramic powder for new energy

1.6 Other general industrial materials

  • Coal powder, coke powder, wood powder, bamboo powder
  • Glass powder, ceramic scraps, building material powder

2. Key Configuration Adjustments for Different Materials

Standard ACMs are modified according to material characteristics, which is the core reason for their wide adaptability. Compared with the sulfur-dedicated version, the main differences are as follows:

Material Characteristic Required ACM Modification Difference from Sulfur ACM
Non-combustible, common minerals Ordinary air circulation, carbon steel or standard stainless steel parts, no explosion-proof devices No nitrogen inert gas system, no oxygen monitoring or explosion relief panels
Combustible dust (starch, resin, carbon black) Basic explosion-proof structure, flame arrestors and venting panels; optional nitrogen protection Lower oxygen control standard than sulfur; simplified inert gas system
High-hardness abrasive materials (quartz, alumina) Wear-resistant alloy hammers, ceramic liners, wear-resistant classifier wheels Anti-wear upgrade instead of anti-static/anti-corrosion design for sulfur
Thermal-sensitive materials (starch, sugar, low-melting resin) Enhanced cooling air system, reduced rotating speed, enlarged air volume Strict temperature control, avoid material melting or deterioration
Food & pharmaceutical materials Full 316L stainless steel contact parts, polished inner surface, sanitary seals, no dead corners Food-grade material standard, no anti-sulfur reaction coating
Sticky or agglomerative powder PTFE anti-stick coatings, optimized airflow layout Prevent material adhesion instead of anti-static for sulfur

3. Processing Performance for General Materials

Air classifier mills deliver consistent performance across most dry bulk solids:

  • Usual finished particle size range: D50 = 5 μm ~ 150 μm, with narrow particle size distribution (PSD)
  • Fully enclosed negative pressure operation to prevent dust leakage, suitable for most fine powder production
  • Integrated grinding + classification in one machine, compact structure and high production efficiency

4. Materials NOT Suitable for Standard Air Classifier Mills

Although versatile, ACMs have limitations. The following materials cannot be processed with standard models:

  1. High-moisture pasty or sticky materials ACM is designed for dry grinding. Materials with moisture content higher than 8–10% will stick to the chamber and block the classifier.
  2. Long flexible fiber materials Long textile fibers, hemp fiber and similar materials will wrap around rotating hammers and rotors, causing equipment failure.
  3. Extremely tough & ductile materials Soft rubber blocks and high-toughness polymers cannot be crushed by impact grinding; they only deform instead of pulverizing.
  4. Oversized bulk ores Large raw ore lumps need primary crushing (jaw crusher, cone crusher) first; ACM is only for fine grinding.
  5. Ultra-low melting point materials Materials that melt under slight friction heat will adhere to the equipment wall (special cryogenic grinding systems are required if processing these).

The air classifier mill is a universal dry fine grinding equipment. Sulfur is just one of its special application scenarios that requires full explosion-proof and nitrogen inertization. For most conventional minerals, chemicals, food and new energy materials, only simple material selection and parameter tuning are needed.

JACAN also provides customized ACM solutions for different industries and materials, matching wear resistance, hygiene, explosion protection and cooling systems according to specific feedstock properties.
